Connect your email
Bring a Gmail account or any IMAP mailbox into Relay so new messages arrive in your shared inbox.
Before you start
Relay reads your mail in one of two ways:
- Connect with Google for a Gmail or Google Workspace address. You sign in with Google and never type a password into Relay.
- Custom IMAP for any other mailbox, such as Outlook, Yahoo, Zoho or the mail that comes with your web host.
Connecting an account brings mail in. To send replies, you also need a sending setup. See Send mail with SMTP.
Connect a Gmail account
- Open Settings, then Connect Email Account (https://relay.oroe.ai/settings/email-accounts).
- Select Connect Account. If this is your first one, the button says Connect Your First Account.
- Choose Connect with Google.
- Under How many days of past emails do you want to sync?, pick how far back Relay should look. Last 7 days (recommended) is a good start. Choose Do not sync past emails (start fresh) if you only want new mail.
- Select Continue to Google, sign in and allow Relay access.
- You come back to Relay, and the account appears under Connected Email Accounts.
Note You can connect one Gmail account with Google. To bring in more mailboxes, use Custom IMAP for the others.
Connect any other mailbox with IMAP
- Open Settings, then Connect Email Account.
- Select Connect Account, then Custom IMAP.
- Type your email address, then click or tab out of the field. For well-known providers, Relay fills in the server settings for you.
- Leave Email Protocol set to IMAP.
- Add a Display Name (optional), such as “Support” or “Sales”.
- Enter your password. If your provider needs an app password, the field says App Password instead. Create one in your provider’s security settings and paste it here.
- Check the IMAP Host and IMAP Port, and the SMTP Host and SMTP Port under SMTP Server Settings (for sending). Your provider’s help pages list the right values if they weren’t filled in.
- Under Sync Settings, leave Enable automatic sync on.
- Select Connect Account.
Good to know Relay checks for new mail about every five minutes. The Sync interval (minutes) menu offers shorter times, but mail still arrives on that roughly five-minute rhythm.
Check on a connected account
Each account in Connected Email Accounts shows when it last synced and how many emails it has brought in. Three small buttons sit beside it:
- Sync now fetches new mail straight away instead of waiting for the next check.
- Test connection checks that Relay can still sign in to the mailbox.
- Disconnect removes the account.
If you see Sync error, the password or app password has usually changed. Disconnect the account and connect it again.
Change or remove an account
Accounts can’t be edited once they’re connected. To change a password or server setting, select Disconnect, confirm, and connect the account again with the new details.
Note Disconnecting stops new mail from arriving. Emails that were already synced stay in your inbox.
